July ARTScrawlABQ

ARTful Saturdays

Albuquerque artists and patrons look forward every month to ARTScrawlABQ‘s First Friday ARTScrawl (5-8 pm) and ARTful Saturday (third Saturday from 1-4 pm). While First Friday ARTScrawls are city-wide events. ARTful Saturdays highlight galleries in different parts of town each month, rotating among galleries in Old Town, Downtown, Nob HIll and the Northeast Heights.

ARTful Saturdays are a great opportunity for families to visit galleries in a concentrated area. Events include artist “meet and greets” and lectures and demonstrations. This month’s ARTful Saturday is July 15 and features galleries in the Northeast Heights. Two of the galleries are the Weyrich Gallery and Palette Contemporary Arts and Crafts.

Weyrich Gallery

Located at 2935D Louisiana Blvd NE, Weyrich Gallery’s exhibit “Water” features four Albuquerque area glass artists: Emily Brock, Doug Gillis, Sarah A Nelson and Marcia Newren, as well as pieces by recently deceased glass artist Jerry Barnett. Artists Talk 3:30 – 4:30 pm.

Weyrich also represents me for my handmade greeting cards, origami earrings and handmade boxes.

Palette Contemporary Art & Craft

Located at 7400 Montgomery Suite 22, Palette presents “Birds of Paradise” featuring paintings and assemblages by Charlie Aldrich. Opening Reception with artist “meet and greet” 3:00 – 6:00 pm.

Ren Adams: Cross-Media Artist

I recently took a class on dry-point etching from Ren Adams at New Grounds Print Workshop. Ren is a cross-media artist and has introduced classes that use hybrid printing methods that break down the boundaries among various printmaking techniques. I enjoyed the class very much and am incorporating dry-point printing with my monotypes to create a new group of paper quilts. (See my blog “Creating New Art with Dry Point Etching“)

Ren move to Albuquerque from California in 2005 to pursue a BFA in Studio Arts (printmaking) at the University of New Mexico. She also has an MFA in Visual Art from Lesley University College of Art & Design.

Ren has a studio above New Grounds where she works on her new media, installation and other work. (She does her video and experimental photography work at home — better computer system!)

Ren has been a great addition to the New Grounds faculty. In addition to dry-point etching, she teaches classes in trace monotype, multi-plate “stamping” and experimental methods in monotype. These new exciting techniques are inspiring new work by the artists who take these classes.

According to Ren, “The combination of inherited tradition and its application to emerging technique offers the perfect, time defying approach. . . There is something complimentary about print and brush, trace and formation, a relationship I  continually explore by combining these mediums formally.”

With her interdisciplinary and cross-media approach to visual art, Ren Adams is an artist to watch. I find her work exciting and look forward to seeing where she takes her art from here.

Soup is Love Update

SOUP IS LOVE PROJECT FOUR MONTH REPORT

We are four months into the Soup is Love Project. More than 30 people participated in the project launch which was held in conjunction with Albuquerque’s citywide Women and Creativity. It was great because we met many of our neighbors, some who came back with their kids or grandkids.  We’ve had another 30 from our Soup is Love MeetUp. Altogether, we have made more than 200 bowls!
